How to change electricity supplier step by step

change electricity supplier

If you have never done it before, it is normal that you wonder how this process works. The truth is that changing supplier is simple, free and without risk of supply cut-off. You just need to be clear about who you want to contract with and follow these steps.

1. Choose a new supplier and tariff

The first thing is to compare and choose the supplier that best suits you. In PROT Energía, for example, we are committed to transparent, stable and 100% certified green energy tariffs. You have to make sure that:

  • The company is registered in the official list of marketers.
  • Offer clear rates, without fine print.
  • It allows you to check updated prices and simulate your invoice.
  • You can easily contact customer service (by phone, email or app).

In addition, if you are interested in changing your electricity supplier to one with green energy, make sure it has a Guarantee of Origin (GoO) certificate issued by the CNMC.

2. Provide your information

If you have already chosen your company, you will have to provide the following information to formalize the contract:

  • Full name and surname of the holder.
  • DNI or NIE.
  • Address of the point of supply.
  • CUPS code (it appears in any old bill, it is like the DNI of the light point).
  • Bank details(IBAN) for direct debit payments.

In principle, you do not have to provide the previous contract or a justification for the cancellation of your contract with your current supplier.

3. We manage the change

Once the contract is formalized, PROT Energía takes care of absolutely everything. You do not have to contact your old company, or perform any additional management. We will only ask you for your details, and as soon as the contract is validated, we will make the change for you.

And the best part? You don’t have to worry about outages or interruptions. Your supply will continue to work as usual, just at a better rate. In fact, we can analyze your current bill without obligation and offer you a customized estimate. Feel free to contact us for more information.

4. Welcome to PROT Energía

Once the changeover is complete, we welcome you to our community of people who, like you, are committed to cleaner, fairer and more transparent energy. You will receive your first bill with us and you will have access to your customer area, where you can consult what you need and resolve any doubts.

Important considerations when switching to another supplier

Changing electricity supplier is a simple process, although there are still some myths out there that often generate doubts. Let’s resolve it:

  1. Is the power cut off during the changeover? No . The change of supplier does not interrupt the supply at any time. The energy arrives to you in the same way, the only thing that changes is who bills you for it.
  2. Is there any cost for the change? No . The switching process is completely free of charge. If you have a contract with permanence with another company, you should check if they impose penalties for early cancellation, but most current tariffs do not have permanence. We, for example, do not.
  3. Can I verify that the energy is green? Yes . At PROT Energía we guarantee that all the energy we supply is certified as 100% renewable, issued by the CNMC. You can check it in each invoice or ask us for the certificates whenever you want.

How many changes of supplier can be made?

Yes, you can change your electricity supplier as many times as you wish. It is also true that, in general, you do not constantly change supplier, at most once a year.

This way you can check the evolution of your consumption and evaluate if you need a more stable tariff, a variable tariff, or one with hourly discrimination. Most companies allow you to cancel without penalty, but you should always read the contract conditions carefully. If you are on a tariff without permanence, you can change without paying fees or cancellation costs at any time.

How long does it take to change electricity suppliers?

The changeover process is not immediate, but it is quite fast, since it takes between 15 and 20 working days from the time the contract is signed. Remember, during this period, you continue to receive electricity with your previous supplier and, once the change is activated, you will receive the bill with your new company. At PROT Energía we will inform you of the whole process so that you are always informed. All this period depends on:

  1. Your distributor’s billing cycle
  2. The time at which the change is processed
  3. Data validation by the CNMC and the distribution company
